Constance Bosworth
The Sunburn Paintings
August 5 - August 20, 2017
Opening Reception: August 5th, 6-8pm
“Creating this work was a magical experience for me. Looking back at years and years of quick beach sketches brought flickering glimpses of lost moments in time. Painting these, I felt like Geppetto breathing life into Pinocchio.” -Constance Bosworth
Constance Bosworth is a figurative painter and portrait artist who was born and raised in New Orleans, where she received a BFA in sculpture and printmaking from Tulane University.
After graduating she moved to New York City, where she continued her studies at The Art Student's League, Parson's School of Design, and The New School University.
She apprenticed under master painters Jan De Ruth, Donald Pierce, Robert M. Kulicke, and most recently, Pam Sheehan.
The basis of all her work is a rare deftness in drawing, both innate and practiced, and her distinctive sense of dramatic colors.
Always fascinated by the human form in motion, she has spent hundreds of hours idly sketching swimmers, bathers and loungers at poolside and at the beach. This show has its roots in those sketches and draws inspiration from the joy — and discomfort! — of human life under the sun.
Each oil painting is unique and a one of a kind original. All are professionally framed and painted on archival handmade paper from Germany. This is her FIRST SOLO exhibition at Birdland Gallery. For more information visit: www.BurkeArtAdvisory.com or call 917-623-9339

The Sanity Series
Works on paper by
Dawn Frances Simon
Exhibition dates: July 15th - July 30th / Opening Reception: June 24th, 5-8pm
About the Exhibit: The Sanity Series is a collection of mixed media collages, all from 2017. Appropriating old texts, illustrations and images from their original context, Simon poetically gives her images new meaning and purpose. Her work is influenced by collage artists such as Beth Hoeckel and Joanna Neborsky. Both of these artists are very different but their ability to create new worlds has inspired Simon to create her own. These abstract yet personal narratives flow from paper to viewer allowing one to make their own interpretations. Like poetry, each placement of a word, each cut, each mark is a valuable, deliberate and thoughtful choice, coming together to create an experience and leave an impression.
Simon states, “Each piece in this series represents a life experience or an idea. As you read and view the items chosen for each collage, you will find clues. These clues will help you to see some meaning of that particular piece. The process is like a treasure hunt. Tiny clues into life’s internal impressions. Once I choose a subject or concept, I search until I find what I need in order to assemble that particular idea.”
All works are created on acid free paper with mechanical pencil, clippings from 1926-1960’s books and magazines and paint.
About the Artist: Born in 1980, Dawn Frances Simon resides locally. She received her BFA from University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She is also a graphic designer and co-founder of Swing Graphics and also the co-founder of a new local magazine titled Breaker Zine.
This is her FIRST SOLO exhibition at Birdland Gallery. For more information visit: www.BurkeArtAdvisory.com or call 917-623-9339

The Formless and Folly
New works by David Macomber
Exhibition dates: June 24 - July 9, 2017
Opening Reception: June 24th, 5-7pm
About the Exhibit:
THE FORMLESS AND FOLLY
Using the ocean as a metaphor, street art techniques and with over a decade of graphic design experience, David states, “I paint stories of mercy and hope.”
This series of paintings comes out of a study of the Creation story. Macomber believes “God moves over the formless chaos to create the earth - Ex nihilo (out of nothing). It was the first act of creating. Land, Sea, Sky, Plants and Animals are all created to work in order with each other. With humans being the final act in the creation narrative. I feel all this earth, ocean and sky were a gift for us to cultivate. Like our Creator, we are meant to form order to chaos. Since that early story and birth of humanity we (humans) have worked against creation - the Folly of destruction. Faith, Love, Peace - these are the true acts of creation. These are where we are fully alive.”
This series of paintings are made using latex house paint and a minimal color pallet and are applied loosely with a sense of controlled chaos. The high horizon line is made to place the viewer with in the story as a symbol that “we are all in this together, we are in the midst of our own creation story.”
About the Artist:
While nearly drowning at 31 years old, David was given a glimpse to what's truly important in this life. Since then, he has become dedicated to creating art and helping others find a new perspective on life. Born on the coast of New Jersey, he came from a commercial fishing family, and understood first hand about how life revolves around the power of the sea. This knowledge and experience, naturally informs his daily creative process.
After being voted “Most Friendly” in his high school and failing art for not following direction, he decided to move to California and devote the rest of my life to helping others and being untraditionally creative.
He and his wife Melissa Mae, have two sons they have adopted through foster care. He has also traveled the world distributing clean drinking water through well drilling & water filters.
This is his FIRST exhibition at Birdland Gallery. For more information visit: www.BurkeArtAdvisory.com or call 917-623-9339

“Using the ocean as a metaphor, street art techniques and over a decade of graphic design experience - I paint stories of Mercy and Hope.” -David Macomber
About the David Macomber's paintings in this exhibit:
“They [the ocean life] are aimlessly wondering, in search for motivation. It’s in that state they came to realization.
The humble and sad will be joining nobility ‘cause vanity and pride are acts of futility.”
Anne Giacolone's meticulous paintings on paper elaborately demonstrate the simple beauty of the ocean's treasures we are freely given.
Kristin Myers, abstractly demonstrates the mood of active yet peaceful oceanic horizons through her delicate line work on vellum paper.
Jessie Wolf Temple's original watercolors detail the whimsical and lovable characteristics of animals and comfort food elevating both to a more spiritual level.
Andrea Sauchelli gives us abstract paintings with a surreal combination of landscapes and cityscapes that seemingly grow from a complicated yet beautiful view of the world.

Evan Zodl Exhibit - Origami and Photos
Birdland Gallery presents, Evan Zodl’s first solo exhibition at Birdland Gallery. The show opens on Saturday, July 9th and runs through July 26th with and opening reception on Saturday, July 9th at 6 p.m. with live music, food, drink and live henna body art by Loren Russo (first come, first serve by donation).
A contemporary (young) renaissance man, Evan Zodl is only 20 years old, an origami and photography artist, surfer, and a double-major in Computer Science and Interactive Multimedia at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ). His “EZ Origami” YouTube channel has 72,000 subscribers and 25,000,000 views. His original origami has traveled the country in various exhibitions and his work have been featured in over 10 international publications
About his original origami
In his own words, “I was first introduced to origami when I was 10 years old. In 5th grade, my friend taught me the basic traditional designs when he did a school project on origami. After a few years of practice, I began creating my own original designs. I wanted to help others learn the art of origami, so I started my “EZ Origami” YouTube channel in 2008. Since then, my instructional videos have taught millions of people how to fold various origami designs. To date, my channel has over 25,000,000 views and 72,000 subscribers.
I love the art because of the fact that you can turn something so inherently simple into something so beautifully complex simply by folding. There are limitless ways to fold a square sheet of paper, and it is amazing to think that there are so many designs that still remain undiscovered. I feel a great sense of accomplishment after designing a model that no one in the world has ever thought of before.
Most of my designs are inspired by fractals, spirals, and recursive patterns found in nature. I continue to be influenced by the massive international origami community online on a daily basis. It is common for origami artists to post photos of their work online to be critiqued by other artists. Over the years, this has allowed my work to be influenced by various artists around the world. Most notably, my recent designs have been inspired by the works of Maria Sinayskaya, Beth Johnson, and Chris Palmer.”
About his surf photography
“My interest in surf photography began in 2013 when my parents bought me my first DSLR camera as a graduation present. My friends and I surf year-round on LBI, so I had always been interested in recording and editing surf videos to share our experiences with others.
I saw surf photography as another way to express what it is like to surf year-round in New Jersey. There are a select few who have experienced winter surfing in New Jersey, so photography allows me to capture some of the emotions and feelings from these particular moments in time. I am highly influenced by my Dad’s passion for photography and most inspired by local surf photographers including Ben Currie, Dylan Jurusz, and Max Krumpholz.”

Terence Smith
New Works on Paper
Birdland Gallery presents, Terence Smith’s second a solo exhibition on Long Beach Island. The show opens on June 18th and runs through July 5th with and opening reception on June 18th, 2016 at 6 p.m. with live music.
Terence Smith (born 1987) is a local artist, surfer and the co-owner of Garden State Surf and Art. While he received his B.A. from Montclair State University in 2011 with a concentration in Fine Arts Education, he is primarily self-taught in drawing and painting. Terence’s subject matter is inspired by his appreciation for local lore, his passion for surf and his recent camping trip across the county. The majority of the work in this exhibit consists of meticulously rendered nontraditional portraits and landscapes that hearken a love of solitude.
“His incredible discipline and talent caught my eye in June of 2014. With over 20-plus years of seeking, finding and nurturing emerging artists, I saw Terence’s work and was sure I found raw, unharnessed, undeniable talent. It has became clear that he is not only passionate about creating his work but he is equally disciplined with his talent and serious about his art career.”
Since then Burke and Smith have been having regular studio visits and critiques in preparation for this exhibit. All works will be for sale, and the opening reception will be an opportunity to meet the artist.

Birdland Gallery is nested in the Artifacts and Co which is located at 100 Bay Avenue @ Centre Street in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. As the Curator and Founder of Birdland Gallery, Elizabeth has partnered with Amy Haeberlein who is the proprietor of Artifacts and Co. “We are excited and honored to bring quality art and culture to the South End of Long Beach Island and the response from the community has been beyond our wildest dreams!”.
